Some thoughts about The Lion King

It seems like The Lion King has always been there for me.

Even though it really wasn't there until I was eight.

I saw The Lion King for the first time on July 7, 1994.

This movie made such an impact on me. When I first saw the preview, I went home and tried to animate the scene where Mufasa jumps up and saves the falling Simba from being trampled by wildebeests. I drew Lion King pictures endlessly. I will put one here. Be warned:

I drew them for everybody. Friends. Family. Teachers. The Principal.

Not only did it enhance my drawing skills, it also budded my interest in writing, with me writing (really bad) fan-fictions with the characters that should never (ever) see the light of day again. I will not even post an excerpt they are so badly written. You would want to rip your eyes out. Even I don't read them (because I like my eyes).

Lion King always makes me think of my friends. It is our childhood; I would go watch Lion King at my best friend's house and then we'd play the SEGA game afterward. (This still makes us laugh because, since we were always watching it there, it's a funny thing when he told me that his mom never knew Mufasa died until she saw the Broadway show last year.)

(Oops. Spoiler alert.)

I took my friends for my 18th birthday on January 12, 2003. It was in IMAX then, and there was only one other group in the huge theatre. It was for a little five year old boy for his birthday. So when they sang happy birthday to him, my friends sang happy birthday to me.

Then, last year on August 14th, my best friend took me to see the Broadway version. It was utterly fantastic.

Today, me and three of my best pals went to see it in 3D.

My friend sums it up with these words: "By far the best movie of our childhood."

And, if you know us, we are still eight years old.

Way, way long ago, back in 2006, I became a fan of Josh Groban. This was right before my mission, and his AWAKE tour happened while I was out, so I didn't get to see that.

So, finally, five years later, he's back in Salt Lake City (where he happily mentioned that this city was where he had is first big venue (the 2002 Winter Olympics) and how much he likes it), and last night I took my mom to his concert, and we had pretty good seats, we were across the floor and to the right of the stage, kind of in the back corner.

The warm up guy was awesome, he was a piano player from America's Got Talent, I think his name was Emu or something. He did crazy medleys of movies and classical stuff, like Flash, Close Encounters, Nadia's Theme, Coldplay. He was all over the ivories, even in them, plucking the strings inside the piano. He didn't even sit down on a bench.

Then this orchestra comes out and starts playing "Straight To You" and then Josh comes out right beneath us to a mini stage which is basically as close as I was to that wild bighorn sheep about two years ago. Of course, all the fan girls on the floor are screaming and freaking out (luckily, we were by mellow, not screamy people; there were little girls in front of us, and some guy who seemed really put out that his girlfriend had dragged him to the concert).

Anyways, it was really fun, Josh did some songs from his earlier albums, said bunches of funny things, then, before the show he had us text in questions that he would spontaneously answer. So they highlight the people who asked the question while he reads and answers it, and this was one of my favorites:

Josh: [Question was what sort of cloud he liked] "I like cumulus...is that a cloud? And I like the ones that look like things."

Then he sang some more songs, did some more funny things (he walked up and down the aisles of the floor, which people were ecstatic about, and when he gets back up to the stage he goes: "
Hoo! Salt Lake, you're very grabby! I've never felt more jubilated or violated at a concert before!").

Then, near the end he finds a couple to join him on stage, one that had been together for 39 years; then finds a single girl (while singing the "All the Single Ladies" song) and then a little boy he talked to earlier in the concert who was probably about 8. Those four went up onto the stage and Josh brings out these couches for them to sit on, tells them to relax and get comfy, and he brings them wine goblets and a jug of milk. The girl tells him it's her birthday, so he sings to her while pouring the milk. Then he sits on his stool and says, "I'm going to sing a song about cheating."

Then at the very end he sings his usual "You Raise Me Up" which I'm sure he is sick to death of, but everyone loves it and, since he doesn't have a gospel choir, he has us be the choir. So we all sing and wave our arms.

I got to go to Lagoon yesterday (a local amusement park) for the first time ever (my friend was shock-ed) with my friend and his brother and sister and some of his brother's friends, and it was really crazy fun. We went on this ride (the Cliffhanger) where we got utterly wet (pictured). There were plenty of crazy fast rides and go upside down rides and spinny rides. It was fun.

And then we left for lunch and and came back, and there was no parking in the main lot, so we went to the back up lot and parked all the way out here:

Haha! Then, all the way home, we were playing a game where we counted how many people would wave back when my friend's brother would wave eagerly at them. I think we got up to 16.

Several weeks ago, my favorite author Neil Gaiman got together with his wife and some friends (Ben Folds, Damian Kulash, and Amanda Palmer.) Their goal was to write and compose eight songs in eight hours, with Neil writing lyrics. They managed to complete six, and the money they're making from it goes to charity. The Art of Addressing a Letter (Also Known as the Art of Not Being Stupid)

Back in the day, people knew how to address letters. People knew what letter were. Back before the days of facebook and twitter and e-mail, people knew how to communicate via paper and pencil (oh, and face to face too).

But I digress.

This is simply about addresses.

I work as an office specialist in a records office at a university. One of my jobs is sending out transcripts. Recently, we've gone online, meaning students can order their transcripts online instead of sending in a hard copy request for me to type into the computer.

You think that'd make less work for me, if people are entering in their own info instead of me having to do it for them.

No.

Nobody knows how to write addresses anymore.

And by nobody I mean mostly just a lot of people.

So my dreams are usually fraught with danger (i.e. me saving the world each night). So last night, I'm trying to save people from being BLOWN UP in a little cafe, and the bad guy totally takes a nail gun and shoots me with it several times in my back right in the middle of my right shoulder. Don't worry, I survived and managed to stop the cafe from blowing up (by use of a time traveling refrigerator, no less).

Anyways, I wake up this morning, and I have this knot in my back, right in the middle of my left shoulder.

But I will share some anyway.

Our friend Melissa took us to Pizza Pie Cafe last night for Christmas (thanks, friend!).

Suffice to say, and I've said it before (and I will say it again and again), we always have the best of times when we all get together.

We get there and there are no big tables, so we all squeeze into one of the little booths ("Who needs elbow room?") We eat pizza, drink 'The Elixir' (also known as Dr. Pepper) and laugh our giddy little heads off as we mishear practically everything everyone is saying ("Did you say Chuck Norris?!") and talk about everything from Macbeth to where Sesame Street went wrong.

Our other friend Jacob (top left, back from Idaho for good) was able to join us afterwords when we convened at Melissa and Jakob's house for card games such as Five Crowns and Guillotine. Melissa's holding Jimmy, their crazy awesome cat who plays fetch. Sadie, his mother, always hides when we come. I think we frighten her.

So I teach the eight-year-olds at church, and yesterday I promised them treats. So I had a little box filled with Christmas cookies:

"What treat is in there?" asked one child.

"Chocolate-covered worms," I replied.

"Ewww!" screamed the girls.

"Cool!" said the boys.

I put my ear against the box. "If you listen closely," I said, "you can hear them wiggling around."

"Ew!" they all screeched again, but all rushed forward and put their ears close against the box. That's when I started chuckling.

"You tricked us!" they said.

Naturally.

My best friend told me about this little miracle today, so I thought I'd share. Firefighters were able to extract a painting from the burned rubble of the Provo Tabernacle--it's a picture of Christ at the second coming by Harry Anderson.
